Medical News Today reveals the ambivalence about the potential success of the new female condom, and I can understand why. I remember the hilarity amongst myself and my peers when the Femidom launched, which we all came to refer to as the 'Vaginal bin liner' for its rather intimidating size. Those of us who were brave enough to try it were not impressed.
However, advocates hope that the new improved version of the female condom, recently approved by the FDA will succeed where the last one failed. The new condom is reportedly easier to use than its predecessor and can be inserted 8 hours before sex, which allows women more control of their reproductive health. However, critics report that the new condom is still cumbersome to use and takes too long to put on, while others complain that it makes a strange noise.
Personally, I think the female condom is a great idea, I'm all for improving women's control over their own sex lives, over their sexual health and their reproductive health. That said, I'm not sure that I'd feel confident enough to try one out with a new sexual partner, as opposed to a long term boyfriend, but perhaps that's just me. If any of our readers has tried one, we (by which I mean I) would love to hear your experiences and reviews!
