According to this report on Sifynews.com, complaints of attacks on women in India have gone down sharply - from just over 4,500 recorded attacks in 20007 to 1,000 in 2010.
In a written reply to a question by parliamentarian Kamlesh Paswan of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said that from 2007 to 2010, the National Committee for Women (NCW) instituted committees to enquiry into specific incidents relating to reports of rape, kidnapping, burning and harassment and beatings by police.
The 2007 NCW report recorded a total of 4,505 complaints; in 2008, there were 4,262 complaints, 3,557 in 2009 and 1,000 attacks were reported up until 6 August this year.
The cases reported in 2007 included 2,768 complaints of dowry harassment and cruelty. These went down in 2008 to 2,025, 1,535 in 2009 and 332 in 2010.
