Oscar winning actor Patricia Neal has died aged 84 from lung cancer. She told her family the night before she passed away: "I've had a lovely time."
Her life though had been beset by tragedy. Before she won an Academy Award for her role in Hud alongside Paul Newman in 1964, her infant son with author Roald Dahl, had suffered brain damage following an accident in his pram. Their seven year old daughter died two years after their son's accident from measles in 1962 and Neal suffered a series of strokes when she was just 39.
However, her indomitable spirit meant she learned to walk and talk again and returned to the screen to earn another Oscar nomination and three Emmy nominations reports Sky News.
She is survived by her children Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy Dahl and her grandchildren include the model and author Sophie Dahl.
