Victims of domestic violence are being urged to come forward and "break the cycle of abuse".
The appeal was made by Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector Colette Smyth following a case where a man throttled his partner while four children were asleep at the property.
Ronald Tyler, 47, was convicted of the manslaughter of Julie McKinley in London, two months after being released from prison for a previous attack on her. He was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of provocation by a 10 - 2 majority.
He told the court he killed his partner after she returned home from a party on New Year's Eve and said their baby was not his, reports The Guardian.
Inspector Smyth said: "Whilst it is not known what Tyler's children may have seen or heard that night, what is certain is that the consequences of his actions will live with them forever. I would urge any victim of domestic violence to come forward to police and break the cycle of abuse."
Women need support to be able to do this, and it is interesting that although the Guardian lists all Tyler's previous convictions, you have to ask what onus and responsibility was put on him to change his behaviour patterns too?
