The Bangladeshi High Court yesterday issued an order "of its own motion" telling the government that it could not force women to wear the full face veil or enforce any other particular religious dress code at educational institutions and offices across the country.
It also ordered the government to ensure that cultural activities and sports in educational institutions were not restricted in any way.
In addition, it issued a rule forcing the government to explain why it should not be illegal to restrict cultural activities and sports in educational institutions and offices and to force women to wear the veil.
This followed a news item published in a Bangla daily saying that students at the Rani Bhabani Women's College were being barred by the principal (who joined two months ago) from entering the college if they were not veiled.
