The police were today called to an incident in East London where the body of a woman in her 40s was found with her throat cut.
Inquiries then led the police to a house in East London which was on fire (probably started deliberately) where the body of the second woman, in her late 60s or 70s, was found on the gound floor.
The man, the ex-husband of the younger victim, was found wounded in the loft of the second property. He was taken to hospital for treatment to a slashed neck. His injuries, thought to be self-inflicted, were not life-threatening.
An emergency call from a passer-by about an attack on the younger woman at a bus stop alerted officers to the original incident. She was declared dead at the scene.
