Here's another hugely depressing story about female genital mutilation, this time in Uganda.
Although the practice is prohibited by law, this story in AllAfrica.com reports that some traditional surgeons from various tribes are now circumcising young girls in the middle of the night to evade law enforcement officers.
One woman surgeon, Musa Sauya, said that although female circumcision (or Wonseptap Koruk) was originally meant to initiate young girls into adulthood, it later became used by men as a way to stop their wives committing adultery.
She said: "In 'Wonsetap Koruk' the girl is made sexually inactive and the target here is to just have sex for reproduction not for enjoyment as this can tempt her into adultery. This is why we circumcise and it will be difficult to drop this because it is embedded within us and part of us. I know that we shall be forced under the new law but we shall also seek other ways of doing it."
Given this attitude, it makes you wonder if FGM will ever stop?
