Julia Perez, also known as 'Jupe', an Indonesian celebrity largely known for her revealing attire amongst the largely Muslim population, is to run for deputy district head, says CNN.
The 29 year old is a distributor of condoms for the company DKT and wants to challenge the taboos that surround sex in the country. She is working closely with the AIDs comission to educate young people about the diseases that could result from having unprotected sex.
She has said, “People say, ‘Oh, Julia, you agree about free sex.’ I say, ‘No, I don’t agree about that.’ But if you don’t want to get sick, if you don’t want HIV, if you don’t want to have more kids, you use condoms.”
Julia Perez is seen as a joke by the Indonesian public and has been criticised by 'Islamis hardliners', but conservative groups have said she should run for office. The Education Minister of Indonesia says there is no room for sex in schools, but Julia Perez, as a public figure, feels she can help.
