Following the attempted replacement of the Quinnipiac University women's volleyball team with a cheerleading squad, a judge has ruled that young women are not given equal rights to young men when it comes to sport.
The judge ruled that the university had not complied with 'Title IX, the 1972 federal law that requires male and female athletes to be given equal opportunities.', reports NY Daily News.
Title IX states that to be counted as a sport, it must have 'coaches, practices, competitions during a defined season, a governing organization, and competition as its primary goal'. Since cheerleading is not counted as a varsity sport under the law, participants are not counted under the athletic statute.
In the past the university has been accused of manipulating numbers when it comes to sport, over reporting the amount of female athletes and under reporting male athletes.
ACLU, which represented the volleyball team during the law suit issued a statement saying: "Today's ruling directs Quinnipiac University to stop playing games with the important principle of equal opportunity for women."
